Congratulations to Harvard’s Claudia Goldin, who this morning learned she’d won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. Goldin is the third woman to receive the economics Nobel, and the first to win it solo.
“I think there are two ways that people find out [if they’ve won a Nobel]. They find out when they are awakened, or they were in a plane. And thank goodness, I was in bed,” Goldin told the Harvard Gazette.
Over six mornings, my partner, our puppy and I sat riveted to our seats with computers at the ready … as we awaited the Nobel announcements. This usually meant rising at 4 a.m. to ensure we had our wake-up coffee and the traditional bagel. We awaited the news from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, listening as they announced it first in Swedish, then in English. Fortunately the name “Harvard” is clear in either language! This is one of my favorite fall events! Mazel tov, Claudia Goldin!
