In Are You There? Nina Livingstone writes of her world with Usher Syndrome: living with both blindness and hearing loss. Here’s a bit from her forthcoming memoir:

I have always been attracted to stories of survival—climbers who summit the world’s most challenging mountains; explorers who clear crevasses in temperatures so frigid they can’t feel their feet when they land; those who dangle across canyons held aloft by a single cable and carabiner tugging at their waist. To me, these are people who face insurmountable odds and survive. Perhaps this is why I feel uncomfortable when people call me a survivor.

I wasn’t dead when they wheeled me into the ER. In a single day I had unexpectedly lost my sight and hearing . . . .
