Launching Nina’s 9, a new interview series that takes readers on a flight with intermittent profiles of people who want to say a few words!
The column debuts with David Brown. David was the WCVB-TV Channel 5 meteorologist for 17 years, leaving that role in 2012. He then held the title of Chief Advancement Officer for the not-for-profit Forsyth Institute. In 2015 he joined Massachusetts Association for the Blind as its Chief Advancement Officer for Community Services.
NINA: If you could create the perfect weather day, what would it look like?
DAVID: Any day that gets me outside. Spring / Summer I like to garden and backpack — so sunshine and 70s. In the Winter, I love to ski and snowshoe so bring on the Nor’easters.
NINA: Rewinding time, what was your happiest moment?
DAVID: My senior year in high school when my parents told the family we were moving yet again; and my high school principal invited me to live with his family.
NINA: What’s your favorite American city? Favorite international destination?
DAVID: Favorite American city is Boston — not just because I live here but because of the weather, the people, and the politics. International destination is Rome. I love the ancient city, the way the sun hits the beautiful colors and the memories it provides me of my dear friend Anna.
NINA: Picture it, you’re an athlete. What sport would you choose in the Olympics?
DAVID: Skateboarding … hands down. It is the most thrilling sport to watch.
NINA: What do you like most about yourself?
DAVID: My resiliency. I like the fact that I get right back up when hit down — learn from each and every experience and grateful for the lessons learned.
NINA: What should someone know about you before meeting you for the first time?
DAVID: I prefer David over Dave.
NINA: Haute couture, have it or not? What is your favorite fabric, color and style? Describe!
DAVID: What is haute couture? Just kidding! Definitely don’t have it. I am color blind, so I don’t know colors — but I tell people I like the color red. Style is everything from jeans to bow ties.
NINA: What do you do when you’re in a bad mood?
DAVID: Look at my dog Cody — he is a little Chiweenie — one ear up and one ear down. That face pops me out of a bad mood right away.
NINA: Got a favorite streaming series/movie, book, restaurant, gallery, museum?
DAVID: Series has to be “Ted Lasso.” Book is “Warmth of Other Suns.” Gallery is Picasso in Paris and Gardner Museum hands down.
Plus 10: What is your most treasured possession?
DAVID: My piano — I love playing — it is the piano I learned on , my mom learned on, my grandmother, too. A 1914 Steinway.
